This article contains step by step instructions for setting up outlook to read IMAP email from the NCSU server.
Note: This information assumes that you already have Outlook Express on your computer and that you already have an Internet connection.
Step 1: Open Outlook Express by either clicking on the Outlook Express icon on the desktop.
Step 2: If this is the first time you have opened Outlook Express, the Internet Connection Wizard will be started. Click on the third option, entitled, “I already have an internet connection…”. Then click Next, and then click Finish. Outlook Express will continue the startup process.
Step 3: Once Outlook Express has started, click on the Tools menu in the top title bar. Then click on Accounts.
Step 4: A box entitled Internet Accounts should appear. Click on the Add Button on the right side of the Internet Accounts box. Now click on the Mail option. This will launch a wizard to help you set up your mail for Outlook Express.
Step 5: Type your name in the field provided. Click Next. Type your email address in the field provided. Click Next. Now, in the field that says “My incoming server is a…” make sure that the option “IMAP” is selected.

- Type yourUnityID.mail.ncsu.edu in the “Incoming mail server” field. For example if your unity ID is meeveret then you would type meeveret.mail.ncsu.edu in incoming mail server field.
Type smtp.ncsu.edu in the “Outgoing mail (SMTP) server” field. Click Next. (If you’re setting up Outlook from a machine NOT on campus, you will have to use the outgoing mail server provided by your Internet Service Provider – ie, RoadRunner uses smtp-server.nc.rr.com).
Type your Unity UserID into the “Account Name” and your password in the “Password” field provided. Then Click Next. The “friendly name” field should be completed for you, so all you have to do is click Next.
Step 6: Click Finish to complete the setup wizard. Outlook Express will prompt you to download your email folders. Click Yes. Next a window containing information about your email folders will be displayed. Click OK to remove this box and start reading your email.
Step 7: Click on the Tools menu in the top title bar. Then click on Options, this will open an “Options” window. Click the on the “Send” tab at the top of the window. The bottom of this window will have a “Mail Sending Format” with two choices. Make sure “Plain Text” is selected. Click OK.
This should allow you to check your Unity email via IMAP.
